Following on from my recent post regarding variable scope within ActionScript, I’m going to explain another “gotcha” that can catch out developers used to “proper” OO languages, such as C# and Java. That gotcha relates to class/ static member inheritance. Consider the following C#/ Java code (ignoring package-level considerations, it will compile in either language): [...]

Today Adobe and Zend entered into a collaboration to bring together the flexibility, productivity and enterprise reliability of PHP and Zend Platform with the user experience benefits of the open source Flex framework . This collaboration will deliver technologies, content and services to make it easy for enterprise developers to build web applications using Flex on the client and PHP on the server. This is great news for many in the PHP community.

I have been using TextMate for a couple years now and I am used to write almost everything by hand. Since AS3 I have been using the AS3 Bundle and mainly it has been to highlight my code and create new documents from the Templates. But I noticed that there are a couple features that might speed up your coding by a bit. List imported classes After the “:” you will get a list of the already imported classes that you can use to declare the type of variable you are declaring.

We actually couldn’t deny the hype of iPhone ( I mean look at where the apps were going ) and it’s tempting to make a jump to iPhone platform. But with this chart, it’s still promising for Flash Lite. With invention of Flash Lite 4, means it will become more faster. Afterall Flash Lite 4 said to support ActionScript 3.0 This is source from Dave Young == The most surprising bit was Flash Lite 4.0. Most developers I talked to thought Flash Lite 3.x is the last version of Flash Lite.

In a previous article I outlined why I needed to inject JavaScript into a page from ActionScript, now I’d like to show the implementation. Essentially I created a new class called JSInjector. Within JSInjector I created a static function…

We’ve been working a lot with the Google Maps Flash API lately; recent projects Ride Oregon and Oregon Bounty make regular use of Google Maps to plot various types of data. Each project raised unique challenges, the solutions to which were rarely found in Google’s documentation. A note about setup: for data storage, retrieval, and manipulation, we use AMFPHP ; for our local dev environment, MAMP and VirtualHostX , managed with a version control system .

I just saw over on the ADC (Adobe Developer Connection) blog that they’ve released an updated version of the Adobe Cookbooks online application (or if you’re looking for the Adobe Flex Cookbook specifically, check out http://cookbooks.adobe.com/flex ). Also, head over to the Developer Connection site and read Ed Sullivan’s exellent “Introducing Adobe Cookbooks 2.0″ article.

Developers that have been using Flex should be pretty familiar by now with the Embed metadata tag which allows you to embed assets into a SWF (like images, SWFs, XML, etc). This option has also been added to CS4 (CS4 uses the Flex SDK to complete this task). What some of you may not know or though of, is that you can actually embed JavaScript libraries into your SWF and have your SWF write those libs to the pages DOM. We’ve been using this technique for a while.

I wrote about ActionScript Spell Checker and 10 more others you can use in your Flash based RIA. Here is one more from Adobe: Squiggly . Squiggly is a spell checking engine for Adobe Flash Player and Adobe AIR. The Squiggly library allows you to easily add spell checking functionality in any Flex 3 based text control. The distribution package consists of a utility for building your own spelling dictionaries, a sample English dictionary, an Action Script package that checks individual words for spelling accuracy, and sample code that demonstrates “check as you type” functionality — see the online demo.

If you’ve come by here a few times you know I have been experimenting with computeSpectrum and webcam motion detection. At a given moment I wanted to combine the 2 of them in order to use voice commands in order to make stuff happen on the screen. That would be pretty badass, right? However I soon learned the microphone feed didn’t go through the SoundMixer of the Flash Player, therefor would would not be able to be analyzed. There was a workaround with FMS/RED5 and bouncing the stream off the server but that’s rather overkill (not to mention the lag).

Adobe has rolled out the next generation of it’s development recipes portal: Adobe Cookbooks There are two major stories delivered with this new version: Contributing has become a lot easier. The prominence and recognition for community members who actively participate in Cookbooks was increased. In detail, there is a set of new features that are making the experience more enjoyable and productive. Support for “topics” and “tags”.

With MAX right around the corner, you would expect some build up. For example, Cairngorm 3. Yes, kids, it’s true! A transformation is coming, which will make Cairngorm more than just a micro-architecture. Instead, Cairngorm is broadening its scope to become a collection of tools, practices, and libraries, all of which form a foundation for use in Flex development. At the core of it, Cairngorm still represents a layered architecture, separation of concerns, and test driven development.

My friends from the Cookbooks team went live with the second iteration of the Adobe Cookbook site. You can use this service to quickly find recipes for specific problems you want to solve using technologies such as: Flex, ActionScript, AIR, Mobile and Devices, JavaScript, PHP, BlazeDS, ColdFusion, Flash Professional, and Video. The search is very fast and accurate. Below you can see a screenshot with the results for “remoteobject”: Of course you can become famous by contributing recipes.

Nick Kuh , the Fool, danced into the Queen’s bed chamber , twirling an aphrodisiac Flex potion lightly between his playful fingers. “Madam, I have come by for perchance that you might like this soothing… uh, orange juice.” The Queen, at first much startled at the Fool’s unannounced appearance, coyly bowed her head and said “Well I do confess a thirst, bringst to me”. She wolfed down the brew in huge gulps and was quickly overcome with a passionate desire for Flex.

Read it here Tonight I attended the “TonTon Flexeurs” (TTFX) meeting with Lee Brimelow and Mike Chambers . While Lee explained all the things that can be done to extend the Flash Platform using the ByteArray class, Mike presented a few of the latest as3corelib library features and a sneak peek of AIR 2.0. AIR 2.0 – codename “Athena” – will feature a lot of new system related updates.

When you go back to the last post, you wil notice the three -tags. In the last one with id=”mainmenu”, we will place our main navigation, consisting of four simple buttons (you can of course place whatever you want, this is just to show the main principle):

Since I’m still in my honeymoon-phase with Pixel Bender, I decided to try to make a basic depth-map shader with it. Just to quickly summarize, depth maps are images which can be used – among other things – to define complex multiple depth-level occlusion/masking situations in a scene. This can come handy in games for example, and can work very nicely especially with pre-rendered scenes, where very precise procedural depth-maps can be generated. Image by Robert S. Donovan . When working with other Flash developers, I am sometimes surprised when they are not aware of some dev tools that I consider essential. I thought it would be useful to list out the tools that I use everyday as a Flash Developer. All of these tools are free and cross-platform unless otherwise stated. None of this will be news to the seasoned Flash devs, but some will find it useful. Let me know in the comments if I’ve missed anything. Applications Desktop apps and browser plugins.

Wonderfl is probably the one of the best-kept Flash secrets on the Web. It allows Flash developers to write and compile ActionScript3 online without the need for the Flash IDE or Flex. That’s right, you can write code in your browser and then watch it in action in realtime right before your very eyes! Community & Learning One of the attractions of wonderfl is the strong community aspect. Members can fork one another’s code to make improvements to someone else’s work or simply to kick-start brand new concepts and creations.

I had a great time at ‘Flash on the beach’ this year and, like everyone else who attended, I have been inspired again to create. This year was also more special, than the previous years that I have attended, because I was fortunate enough to be able to speak on the main stage for 3 minutes [...]

Some days ago Adobe released the spell-checking library called “Squiggly“. According to Adobe the library “allows you to easily add spell checking functionality in any Flex 3 based text control” – but because most of our projects are AS3 only, we decided to build a class which allows you to use the SpellChecker’s functionality with every normal TextField in Flash.Unfortunately Adobe messed up the Docs of the library’s current version (BTW, why do we need to download it? every other doc is accessible online) – they are talking about Events and EventDispatcher where no Dispatcher can be found and not even one Event is fired.

Here is a run-down of the most interesting talks: Day 1 After the interesting keynote which was kicked off a Mexican band, a few of us went to see Visualising Voice: Using the Flash Microphone for advanced interaction by Chuck Freeman. Chuck discussed his quest to persuade Adobe to extend the microphone feature in Flash whilst impressing us with his examples and research. Dr Woohoo! was next up. We were all blown away by just how much incredible work this guy was doing and his imaginative combination of technology.

Download free Creating Generative Art With Flash pdf. With numerous Flickr pools and other sites such as www.generatorx.no devoted to displaying generative art, this creative trend is gaining steam. With some of the more popular tools such as VVVV and Processing being easy enough to use, but a bit esoteric, you may feel left out as a Flash user. With Adobe’s release of ActionScript 3.0, it’s possible to create beautiful generative pieces using tools you already have in your arsenal.

On Tuesday, I did my Flash on the Beach session on Application Frameworks. It went very well and I received a lot of very positive feedback. Thank you to everyone who came along. We had a full house and I gather many people couldn’t get in for which I apologise. Hopefully I can do a similar talk at some other conferences. A few people have asked for the slides, so here they are.
