Verizon wants to build its own app store, and is planning a July 28 event to entice developers to its platform. Like everyone else wooing programmers, the company hopes to get the equivalent of the in-crowd building the hottest apps that will elevate its store, and thus its phones and network, to the level of popularity that Apple’s iPhone currently enjoys. But getting a critical mass of developers building great software isn’t an easy task. And while Verizon is romancing developers, the carrier isn’t as solicitous of its handset partners.

According to the Telegraph (UK), the music download site 7Digital will be launching a service for U2’s new favorite handset this September. Based around an application that will be available in BlackBerry’s App World, customers will be able to download music (with “most” tracks being DRM-free) directly to their phone for 79 cents a pop.

Ever since Apple first launched their App Store pretty much every handset manufacturer has done the same . LG however, has been a latecomer to the game only recently announcing the launch of their LG Application Store in Asia. The LG Application Store will reportedly launch with 1,400 applications with only 100 of them being free. Furthermore, LG says that if Asia takes to their app store as they predict they will take the service global by the end of 2009.

This past Saturday, July 11, marked the one year anniversary of the opening of the iPhone App Store. In that time Apple has simultaneously redefined the expectations of what a mobile phone can do, and fundamentally changed the way that software for smartphones is delivered to consumers. There are now about 58,000 applications available through the App Store, providing everything from bird watching reference guides , to live video of baseball games , to first-person shooters like Doom Resurrection , to Koi ponds .

English comedian, writer and Twitter-holic Stephen Fry has admitted to illegally downloading his old mate Hugh Laurie’s latest TV series, while criticising the computing industry’s consensus on P2P piracy. Speaking at an Apple iTunes Live event at Camden’s roundhouse over the weekend, Fry criticised the ‘three strikes and your out’ style approach of demonising (and attempting to sue) individuals for illegally sharing copyrighted material online.
