Today Apple announced that the iTunes App Store had reached more milestones: 1.5 Billion (with a ‘B’), 65,000 total apps and 100,000 app developers.  Steve Jobs was quoted as saying: “With 1.5 billion apps downloaded, it is going to be very hard for others to catch up.” This statement couldn’t be more true as we see other app stores ( Blackberry App World , Palm Pre’s App Catalog , Nokia’s Ovi Store and Verizon’s app store) launching and making every effort to catch up with Apple.

Why does Apple’s iPhone always have the best apps?July 14th, 2009 | by Jhananthi Janakiraman | iPhone sales have become somewhat of a milestone, not to mention the recent 1st year anniversary of the Apple App Store reaching a status all on its own, while surpassing 1.5 million downloads. Of course, there’s no doubt iPhone sales are primarily being driven by its amazing variety of applications available for download.Just why are there so many iPhone apps when compared to other platforms? Although Java is a powerful platform, it is difficult to develop apps for it, hence developers try to avoid developing apps for BlackBerry phones which runs Java.

There are over 100,000 developers in the iPhone Developer Program. Apple’s Steve Jobs says they have so many Apps in the Apple App Store that it will be difficult for rivals like BlackBerry and the Palm Pre to catch up. “The App Store is like nothing the industry has ever seen before in both scale and quality,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO.

Developers overwhelmed by the deluge of mobile application stores that have opened in the last year will soon have the option to build apps for yet another platform, Windows Marketplace for Mobile. Microsoft’s answer to the Apple App Store isn’t launching until this fall, but it will start accepting submissions from developers on July 27. As reported on 148 Apps today: “Apple today announced that the iTunes App Store has served over 1.5 billion app downloads worldwide. This comes less than 3 months since the Apple announced the 1 billionth download in April. The App Store continues to show amazing growth and has seen over 100,000 developers sign up for the iPhone developer program. While there are many discussed problems with the app store from a developer prospective, it has really taken off with consumers.

Post from: FSMdotCOM Use Mediafly For Podcasts. Works With iPhone, iTouch and Blackberry Ever since the mobile version of iTunes allowed podcast downloads, there’s been reason to rejoice – on-the-fly podcast accessibility is better than ever, but it’s still not great for managing subscriptions. For a limited time, Mediafly will be free for download for the iPhone and iPod Touch through the Apple App Store. Mediafly gives users access to video and audio podcasts across the internet.

On the Blackberry App World, UK-based 7digital is prepping an over-the-air download store for delivery in September, according to several reports .  First-run countries include the UK, US, Canada, France, Italy, Germany and Spain, and downloads will be delivered as one-off, a-la-carte songs. Blackberry owner RIM believes that music is a big part of the mobile experience and they really want to be at the forefront. Additionally, Shazam has sorted out their Blackberry Storm application.

Apple, in the current second era of Steve Jobs, doesn’t “invent” products. Instead, the company takes existing ideas and massively improves on them. The digital music player, smartphone, online music store and cell phone application store all existed in various forms at other companies before Apple decided to get involved — and turn those industries upside-down. The App Store is just the latest game changer to come out of Apple’s Cupertino labs, and it has been a smashing success.

Does music express the kind of people we are? I am not sure, but it’s a direct barometer of our likes and dislikes. I guess going by the mobile ringtone rage and the number of websites feeding the craving, the idea of saying ‘who we are’ through music has entered the cells too. I am unashamedly one of them – a diehard Trekkie, my mobile is pimped up with sounds from the Star Trek series. Is there a better way of making a cool statement than with a device that’s now a part of our anatomy? I guess not.

It seems like every other month or so we’re reporting about a new benchmark for the Apple App Store. First it was 500 million downloads, then one billion. Well now the popular App Store has hit 1.5 billion downloads. It was just three months ago that the App Store hit the one billion downloads mark, at this rate it looks like they will hit two billion downloads in another three months.

Apple’s popular App Store has proven that selling mobile applications for smartphones is a hot business, but can all these copycat application stores expect to find the same success as the App Store? Companies, such as Nokia, Google, LG Electronics, Research In Motion and Microsoft are hoping they can. Since the Apple App Store came on the scene a year ago, these companies have each announced plans for their own application stores.

Leave it to Verizon to spoil the party. The great news that Microsoft will make Windows Marketplace for Mobile available for Windows Mobile 6.0 and 6.1 was tempered somewhat a whole bunch by news that Verizon won’t allow the Marketplace upfront. Instead, VZW is launching its own app store and will announce it July 28.

On 1st April 2009, RIM started the Application Store AppWorld, following the lead of the already extremely successful AppStore Apple brought up about a year ago. RIM announced the fact that they will start an Application Store at the Developer Conference in Santa Clara in October 2008. Since then a lot of Developers and Consumers were waiting for the day they would launch AppWorld. Finally on the 1st April 2009 it got released – but the name ‘AppWorld’ is already quite misleading: The word ‘World’ is not true since it only launched in UK, Canada and the USA at the beginning.

News from BlackBerry front. Facebook, Tweeter, what else? BlackBerry is said to launch its own social network tomorrow. First I’m not sure why that thing on the screenshot would be called a social network – it looks like a forum. Apparently, users are said to be able to rate apps, hence the “social network” aspect (so Netflix is a social network?). The good thing is that the system will filter out content that is not related the BlackBerry that you currently own or care about.

iPhone/Android/BlackBerry: TuneWiki does pretty much everything your phone’s built-in music player does, then does much more. The notable feature is real-time lyrics display, but TuneWiki also geo-locates songs playing near you, shares favorites on social networks, and handles radio admirably. When we say everything your built-in music app does, we mean it—on iPhones, TuneWiki continues playing music you’ve queued up even after you close the app, by pushing your playlist over to the default music program.

Based around an application that will be available in BlackBerry’s App World , customers will be able to download music (with “most” tracks being DRM-free) directly to their phone for 79 cents a pop.
