It has been a long time since I wrote about RIM’s BlackBerry lines and the App World that went live in March 2009. Today is the right time to compare the iPhone and BlackBerry and App Store and App World. App Store was launched in July 2008 and the App World of Research in Motion was launched in March, 2009, a difference of nearly a year. The App Store was launched with a few hundred applications on board, same in case of App World.

It seems we’ve seen BlackBerry Desktop Manager 5.0 pop up in the blogs quite a bit the last few days. First it showed up on the CD shipped with the Tour , and then it popped up on Verizon’s site a few days later. Users who didn’t have the CD or a Verizon phone number were sadly out of luck. Well now its “official” – BlackBerry Desktop Manager is available for download from BlackBerry.com for everyone. This is the same version (5.0.0.8) but it is available in multi-language or with/without Media Manager.

From FT.com Tech Blog . Apple customers may have downloaded 1.5bn applications from its AppStore in the past year for their iPhones and iPod touches, but the service does not represent the future for the mobile industry, according to Google. Vic Gundotra, Google Engineering vice president and developer evangelist, told the Mobilebeat conference in San Francisco on Thursday that the web had won and users of mobile phones would get their information and entertainment from browsers in future.

Before the release of Apple Inc.’s iPhone, many aspects of mobile technology – like user engagement, device capabilities and ways of profiting off of new software – were purely theoretical. But those days have passed, and today it’s common knowledge that smartphones work, that consumers love them, and that they will pay for the various features that are available for them. At a mobile technology conference in San Francisco on Thursday, investors in a panel discussion called the release and rapid adoption of the iPhone “the first wave” of mobile technology – and they scanned the horizon for the next wave.

After stressing that it planned to open up its App Catalog to all comers since the day the Pre was unveiled, Palm has finally released the Mojo SDK to the public and will begin taking App Catalog submissions from one and all. The announcement was posted on Palm’s blog today, and it boasted that 1.8 million apps have been downloaded from the beta store so far. Of course, there are only about 30 apps on offer, so the number of downloads could’ve been astronomically higher if they had opened the developer beta program just a bit more.

Filed under: Good news , Products and services , Apple Inc (AAPL) Did anyone think that Apple, Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL ) would ever count 1.5 billion downloads of applications from its iPhone/iPod App Store? In a tiny over two years, the iPhone has become a worldwide mobile phenomenon, with three versions so far (the original, the 3G model and now the 3GS). In a little over a year, the App Store that carries 65,000 downloadable programs (give or take) has seen 1.5 billion program downloads.

Slacker , personally my favorite among the streaming internet radio applications for BlackBerry, is now being pushed to BlackBerry Storm devices automatically. Slacker and Verizon have worked out a deal in which Verizon will push Slacker Personal Radio for BlackBerry out to all Verizon BlackBerry Storm users. This special version of Slacker connects to V Cast and will allow users to purchase and download the songs they are currently listening to directly to their BlackBerry Storm.

GigaOM reports the following: …Verizon’s Ryan Hughes, VP Partner Management, said in an interview Friday that the network operator’s app store will be the sole marketplace on devices sold by the company , meaning stores such as Research In Motion’s BlackBerry App World or Microsoft’s Windows Mobile Marketplace won’t get placement on Verizon handsets unless a consumer downloads them. … While Microsoft is likely to hinder these efforts by Verizon (stay tuned – information on that coming soon), RIM is rather unlikely to stand up against VZ – they are, after all, one of their biggest customers.

In a recent interview with RIM VP Jeff McDowell , it was brought up that App World had hit its 2,000th application. This may seem insignificant compared to the 40,000 applications in Apple’s App Store but there is a lot going on that is skewing the numbers. While Jeff’s answer was good, saying “I don’t think it matters whether it’s 40,000 or 2,000, you’ve still got a broad range of choice,” there is something deceptive going on that should have been exposed during the interview.
