Today, it is now at a staggering 50,000 apps and counting, with over 1,000,000,000 downloads . It’s pretty incredible when you think about it. The scary thing is it doesn’t seem like the App Store momentum is slowing down–it is still growing everyday. DoubleTwist , a universal media management desktop application for Macs and Personal computers, not only has a clever marketing team behind it but also seems to be something a lot of people have been waiting for. The free software, which works like a multi-platform version of iTunes with a social networking component, has been downloaded hundreds of thousands of times since it launched in February (exact number aren’t disclosed for the time being).

It might look humble next to Apple’s App Store, but there are now more than 2,000 programs available at BlackBerry ’s App World. BlackBerry’s App World is growing quickly. It might seem like small fruit next to the 50,000 programs atApple’s App Store, but it’s quickly risen to 2,000 and growing for the smartphone since its launch in March. Of course, it’s aimed mostly at non-business customers, and RIM hasn’t said how many downloads there have been.

Every once in a while I come across something so amazingly simple that I kick myself for not having discovered it before. It’s yet another reason I love the BlackBerry: after years of playing around with it and writing down my findings, there are still things to learn. This one is pretty basic, but totally practical. Some people like to write novellas when they send an email. Sometimes it’s annoying, but other times it’s necessary and you actually have to read through the thing.

It may have some 48,000 or so to go before it catches the runaway leader in app choice, but doubling up its catalog after launching just 3.5 months ago ain’t nothing to scoff at. As RIM suffers through the traditional growing pains with its fledgling BlackBerry App World, it has managed to amass around 2,000 programs for users to love, hate or feel completely indifferent about. According to Jeff McDowell , vice president of global alliances, that number is apt to rise when it goes live in Italy, France, Germany and Spain this month.

Leading Mobile Phone manufacturers like Nokia, Apple and Research in Motion (RIM) are in the process of rolling out localised versions of their application stores in India. These application stores will have a collection of applications which are customized for the Indian market. Nokia, which recently started its Ovi Store , has plans to roll out the localised version by December this year.

And we’ve known that this was slightly odd because U2 lead singer Bono is a founder of Elevation Partners (which, yes, was named after a U2 song). The same Elevation Partners that owns a huge stake in Palm, makers of the Pre. But good for Bono, apparently not mixing work and, well, other work.

BlackBerry App World has just crossed the 200o BlackBerry applicatoin threshold and, later this month, will be available to BlackBerry users in Italy, France, Germany and Spain.  The problem for RIM is that App World is still pretty lame, if you ask me. The only reason that RIM came out with BlackBerry App World was because of the success of Apple’s App Store, which just turned a year old by the way.  If you are going to emulate the App Store, emulate the App Store.  Give me an interface that is easy to search, $0.99 downloads, and the  ability to buy applications from my desktop.
