Wasn’t “ComputerWeek” once a publication full of hardware deals and stuff like that? Seems like it was, but we’re reaching back into the 1990s with that one. Regardless, I’ve certainly spent a lot of time around computers this week. Not that I don’t normally; after all, I work with them for my job, which has me sitting in front of one for at least 8-10 hours a day. But this week I’ve been engaged in a lot of fussing around with hardware and software, researching compatibility, coming up with contingency plans and even overclocking my own workstation here at home (something I haven’t dabbled with in some years).

Its been a really long time since I last posted here. But I feel it’s my duty to keep the ‘Underground Community’ informed about the information I have access to. Personally, I feel that the ‘Underground’ has lost its true meaning, its sense of presence – after 3 WordPress bans and removing of ’Objectionable’ Content on the blog. I still believe that V1 i.e. this blog is a better way to communicate with the community rather than V2 as this blog is better known.

Ars Technica has once again found references to an iProd 1,1 in Apple firmware, this time iPhone 3.1 Beta 3. iProd was last seen back in May in the iPhone 3.0 betas under the prototype designation iProd 0,1. For those unfamiliar with Apple versioning, 0,1 is thought to be used for pre-release prototype hardware. 1,1 was used for both the first iPhone (original 2G) and iPod touch.

Before we talk about the Apple ( NSDQ: AAPL )/Mac tablet that Stefan absolutely believes is a crock of bullshit , let’s talk about the latest iPhone OS 3.1 beta release. The still-developing iPhone OS 3.1 beta contains a USBConfiguration.plist that refers to some sort of “ iProd ” device. The mystery device indicates configurations for “standardMuxPTPEthernet” and “AppleUSBEthernet,” both of which are used by the iPhone. Now, the unknown “iProd” device could have something to do with the China-specific iPhone that Apple is crafting for China Unicom.

There is one very popular clone with the “TV out” feature (the CECT A988). This means that you can hook the phone up to your television and watch video on the phone on a larger screen. The analog television on the N model is different because you are watching real time local television via antenna. The 988 is also not as finger friendly for messaging.

Sometimes it’s all about the little things. If an iPhone is greater than the some of its parts, then it’s weaker than the some of its faults. I have found many minor quibbles over the past year. Some you no doubt will agree with, while others you may even consider to be a feature. Here’s my list for better or worse: No indicator lights – Every phone I’ve owned prior to the iPhone used flashing colored lights to tell me at a glance what was going on. Knowing I have a text or missed call or email was easier then.

Last night, GeoHot updated his blog in regards to the purplera1n jailbreak working on the 3.0.1 firmware. Below is what he had to say. “Currently, it doesn’t work, and I don’t plan to ever make it work. Apple changed the kernel from 3.0 to 3.0.1, and I patch the kernel in a very specific spot. I code to make things simple, hacky, and fast.

Anyone besides me noticing anything different with 3.0.1? The only thing this was supposed to do was to fix that SMS vulnerability. But … 1 – I stream audio via blue tooth from the phone to my car stereo. When I was stopped at a red light, picked up the phone to make a call, planning on using the stereo’s handsfree capabilities. Dialed the number, menu came up asking how I want to handle the call, tapped on Pioneer BT Audio, and the bluetooth connection was dropped. Completely.
