July 16th, 2009 Goto commentsLeave a comment So I’ve been tethering my iPhone to my new Macbook Pro 13? since I purchased the laptop. I figured now was a good time to write about it. I’ve been doing it for a few weeks now. Here are my findings. Background info:Equipment: iPhone 3G, Optus, 500MB data included a month. Macbook Pro 13? 2.53Ghz. Used: mainly on the train to and from work in Perth CBD at speeds up to 130kphThe iPhone 3.0 OS allows tethering, some mobile carriers allow tethering out of the box, others do not.

Software upgrading is one of those common chores that many computer users have grown accustomed to. It’s something you need to do from time to time, because it fixes bugs, plugs security holes, adds new features, etc. The upgrade it usually something good. So, it is quite frustrating (at least to affected users) when some upgrades are designed to break something. That’s something that is beginning to happen quite often with Apple’s software upgrades for a variety of their products such as their iPhone and iTunes software.

The proof of the pudding, they say, is in the eating. And so far, I’m liking what I’m eating. My shiny new (refurbished) MacBook Pro arrived this morning via FedEx ground. The timing stunk — I was up to my ears in alligators due to some network issues at the data center (turned out to be a DDoS targeting another client in the facility, but it was bringing our stuff to its knees). Phone was ringing off the hook, and I was engaged in some serious geekified troubleshooting to determine if we had a problem.

Yesterday evening was a red-letter night for Apple developers, especially if you happened to have both Mac and iPhone developer accounts. That’s because Apple dropped new builds of both iPhone OS 3.1 and Snow Leopard, bringing it to version 10A411. Users with an iPhone developer account can head to Apple’s Developer Connection web site and get iPhone 3.1 Beta 2 and its attendant SDK in the usual way, while Snow Leopard users should find the new build available when they open up Software Update.

Just weeks after iPhone 3.0 OS was made public, Apple has now rolled out a developer build of version 3.1, build 7C97D, along with the SDK, a pretty early for an update though. The new iPhone 3.1 OS Beta release is meant for developers only so before you plug in your device to steal an update, think twice. Apple has released the beta version of the iPhone 3.1 OS, perhaps to justify the fine-spun debate where some believe the hardware is guilty for the bugs and some throw the blame on the iPhone OS 3.0.

MacRumors reports that the latest iPhone 3.1 beta 2 OS release breaks hacks that allow AT&T customers to tether their phones to their PCs for wireless access. As all iPhone enthusiasts know, “legal” tethering is available in most other countries already, but AT&T hasn’t yet rolled out the feature to US iPhone customers. It’s not surprising the latest OS update breaks tethering hacks.

AT&T must be getting close to offering a tethering plan for the iPhone. They just put an end to the jail break workaround tethering feature many have discovered with the OS 3.0 and beta 3.1 versions. The new OS 3.1 beta 2 does not appear to allow tethering. Put two and two together and you find $$$$. AT&T does not want pirate tether’s out there taking advantage of their network. I can’t blame them, but boy I can’t wait to see how they further gouge AT&T customers with an additional data plan (vomit).

Hello there! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed for updates on this topic. In the past few years, lots and lots of iPhone- and iPode-docks were released on the market. They made it possible to listen to your mp3-player music on the stereo. The A2DP Bluetooth Audio Receiver seems to be a more affordable solution.Docks for iPods, iPhones and other mobile devices are handy, but are rarely cheap. I’ve recently found out what the new iPhone 3GS is capable of. First of all, it will appear the 32GB version, along with the 16GB one. The price will be 299 and 199$, associated with some monthly plans to fit. We don’t know yet how much it will cost without monthly plan and if they will be available this way. The 8GB version will still be available for a while for 99$ (but the 3G version, not the new one). We know that the 3GS was realeased on June 19th and it’s expected to be available in stores now already.

Yo ho! I am a little late in reporting this, but it’s still worth some cents. Apple has released the beta 2 version of iPhone OS 3.1 and SDK. Registered developers, go ahead and download the OS , discover the secrets and let the iWorld hear about the tidbit features. And those of you who not registered but are tempted to test the beta OS, heed Apple’s warning: “ These versions are for development and testing only and should be installed on devices dedicated to iPhone OS 3.1 beta software

One of the big changes discovered in the latest iPhone 3.1 Beta released tonight was that it seems to disable tethering hacks for AT&T customers in the U.S. Tethering is the process by which you can share your iPhone’s wireless internet connection with your laptop via USB or Bluetooth. This allows you to have access to the internet from your laptop, using your iPhone as a wireless modem. While tethering officially arrived with the 3.0 firmware, U.S. AT&T customers have been unable to officially take advantage of it.

The first iPhone application under the akosma brand has just been published on the App Store: bluewoki is a very simple walkie-talkie application, which uses the new GameKit framework available on the iPhone OS 3.0. It is available at the App Store ! In English, Spanish and French. The source code is really simple (around 170 lines of code) and you can get it, as usual, from Github with a BSD license.

If you are an iPhone developer head on over to Apple’s iPhone Developer Center and download the latest 3.1 beta.Although 3.0 is just a few weeks old, Apple is already busy at work creating the next release and causing those of us who do technical writing to try our hardest to keep up.The first 3.1 firmware beta added a number of new features to the iPhone’s operating system including non-destructive video edits, Voice Control over Bluetooth and a number of other minor improvements.Release documentation show no major changes for this second beta version, but more information typically comes out as people have time to try it out.

The touch screen responds very well to the fingers though the stylus does not work properly in most cases. The front panel of the S5603 has earpiece just above the screen as in most of the mobile phones and the light sensor and the secondary video call camera on the right. The calling keys, the back button and the power buttons are properly placed below the screen. The back button looks like a D-pad and can be mistaken as navigation key.

It seems like there are a lot of players in the media player market, but Apple seems to rule the market. So how does Samsung think they can compete? Samsung’s YP-R1 is a smallish and good looking portable media player that will hit South Korea next month says AceKard 2 . Sadly, we don’t have a price on the device yet. We do have some specs though. The YP-R1 will have a 2.7? QVGA touchscreen display with haptic feedback, DNSe 3.0, Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity, dictionary, a voice recorder, TV-out, an integrated FM radio and recording capability.

Ok so the iPhone OS 3.1 has been dished out to developers to get cracking over. And now that they’ve had a day or two to play around with it, we can unofficially share the change log with all you enthusiasts. Options for MMS are back on AT&T, but not sending or receiving. Non-destructive video editing means trimming a clip no longer saves over the original video but gives you the option to “Save as copy…” Voice Control now works over Bluetooth iPhone vibrates when moving icons
