This morning’s tempest in the teapot involves Google Voice apps being rejected by Apple’s iPhone store. iPhone App Developer Sean Kovacs says his GV mobile app was pulled and since then several others have been rejected by Apple as well. Even Google’s official app has been turned down, because apparently it “duplicates features that come with the iPhone.” Some allege that Apple is doing this at AT&T’s behest. That is just flat-out wrong: If it were true, then Google Voice would be banned on BlackBerry devices that use AT&T as well.

Filed under: Apple , Google , VoIP , iPhone Apple doesn’t particularly like it when developer release applications that compete directly with Apple’s iPhone software. That’s why you won’t find any full featured web browsers in the App Store. And apparently it’s why you also won’t find any mobile apps for using Google Voice . Of course, up until recently, there was an unofficial Google Voice app called GV Mobile that let you make and receive calls and access your Google Voice voicemail.

Satellite Internet service appears to be becoming more and more popular. Once the exclusive domain of exploration companies and war journalists, there are now thousands of people with an extra dish on the home or RV. Part of the reason for this is that certain technologies have increased the bandwidth and decreased the cost. Now, there are geostationary satellites. That’s a fancy word for saying the satellite stays still in relation to your position on Earth.  You have to set the dish up just once and, barring windstorms or worse, the dish stays in constant communication with the satellite.

I’ve been asked this question so many times I thought I’d put my thoughts down here for you to read. Let’s start by pointing out a couple things first. First off, depending on where you live, you may not have a choice of access. Satellite may be your only choice, which makes this null and void. Don’t fret, satellite is better than any dial-up and the contract lengths are generally 12-14 months in length. It will cost a bit more, given the extra equipment involved, but it certainly beats dial-up (if you can afford it).

The service has progressed steadily through the years, and is a rock-solid way to track workouts, including a step counter, GPS tracking, and a host of other features, even including a heart rate monitor feature on the N79 Active! However, I’m starting to believe that Nokia is trying to kill off its most innovative service now, after I’ve tried to use the service for the past few months.
