Now however, things have changed. It seems like the new Zune HD might have a fighting chance against Apple. For example, this time round people at least know that something called the Zune HD is coming. Sure, many won’t ever know that the Zune line existed long before the new Zune HD and that Microsoft has actually killed off all the other Zunes.

With Q4 I mean the holidays approaching fast, the companies are going in to overdrive to catch the gift-giving rush in time. After all, in the current market situation, it is more important than ever before (except the 90s) to catch your customers as they switch to ‘spend’ mode. We saw Apple release updated versions of the favorite Apple gift items – the iPods . Now we have Zune HD releasing in a just a few more hours. Microsoft has gone ahead and killed off the every other Zune in order to make room for the Zune HD.

A lot of our faithful listeners have inquired as to the status of last week’s podcast. We regret to inform everyone that we lost the audio just after we were done recording. To be more exact, the Mac Pro at AOL’s studio which was recording our rare (and magical) in-person podcast decided to upchuck the boogie and destroy our precious tracks. What that means is we will be skipping that show (it is already the following week) — though in the next few days we’ll bring you the first-ever Engadget Show as well as a proper podcast.

As we reported about a month ago , Zune HD is officially being released on September 15th [tomorrow]. The Zune website has even gone down for “scheduled maintenance,” as you can see in the image above. All that in preparation of the big launch tomorrow. So, for the time being you won’t be able to access Zune.net, the Zune forums or the Zune Marketplace. Remember, patience is a virtue.

The Zune homepage is currently displaying the banner shown above, while a good number of our tipsters and staffers have confirmed that signing into Zune Marketplace is impossible. The Zune HD media player will also be a portable gaming device, with a handful of games available when the sleek gadget launches Tuesday, a Microsoft representative told Wired.com. At this summer’s E3 videogame conference, Microsoft said only that the upcoming Zune HD would play nice with the Xbox 360. But a series of video ads prematurely released this weekend â?? then quickly yanked at Microsoft’s request â?? hinted that Zune HD would be a platform for portable gaming, putting it in direct competition with Apple’s iPhone, Sony’s PSP and the Nintendo DS.

When I owned the original Zune, I felt at the time that it had a competitive advantage over Apple’s iPod line .

Tomorrow’s the big day. The Zune HD will finally be available. If you haven’t already pre-ordered one, then you’re in luck. Being a product reviewer can be an odd and sometimes frustrating thing to be. I’ve been told that I’ve got one of the greatest jobs in the world, and I’ve been told I’m ‘envied’ by some, it’s odd to hear that really, but whatever, guess I’m just modest.. Actually getting products for review can be fairly difficult, at least the new stuff. The idea of course is to get it first, early, before anyone else. The new Zune HD comes out tomorrow and of course I hit up my contact to try and get one, but I was turned down.

Incase you are planning to buy either of the two most prominent portable media players on the planet, here’s a last minute summary round-up. Considering just the hardware technology, Zune HD does seem to be superior than the iPod Touch 3rd gen. But then again Apple already has a significantly strong app store with thousands to choose from. Of course that does not end there, considering Microsoft having a tremendous presence in development tools/market, it may be just a matter of time for it to catch up.

The first in-the-wild shots of the upcoming HTC Leo uber-smartphone have emerged, and it’s shaping up to be a monster.  Dwarfing both an HTC Touch Pro2 and a Touch HD , the Leo packs a vast 4.3-inch touchscreen, Windows Mobile 6.5 and a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU. There’s also a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, and the touchscreen is expected – though not yet confirmed – to be a capacitive panel rather than the more traditional resistive.

Loveandhatejw over at ZuneBoards posted a picture of himself (that haircut is a mess lol) and the black Zune HD he grabbed at Best Buy. Unfortunately the player his unusable without the Zune 4.0 software which is supposed to unlock the device. Yea well I picked mine up from a buddy at best buy today. It’s useless out of the box but here is my pic with it from webcam. Sorry for crappyy q uality in advance. I may or may not upload more pics. Got the software? Out of the box no software is included.
