Someone looking at Apple’s last quarterly earnings report made an observation which is pretty damn important: the iPhone has become Apple’s second most important source of revenue. That puts the iPod into third place, with actual Mac computers still retaining the leading spot. The iPhone’s success on Apple’s balance sheet is a good thing. As neat as the iPod is, you can’t keep selling the same product to consumers forever, even if it is updated regularly.

The folks over at Cnet got their hands on the second coming of the Zune . Zune HD is Microsoft ’s newest attempt to steal the MP3 player crown away from Apple and the iPod. To this date the attempt has been a miserable failure, but the Redmond folks are looking to turn that around with this new offering. Those three people in Sheboygan who don’t already own a MP3 player are in luck, CNet reviewers love the Zune HD and think that’s it is the road to redemption for Microsoft.

The metal enclosure is a little more angular than the curvy chrome of the iPod Touch, but feels just as nice and has the advantage of laying flat instead of teetering around. As effusive as Cnet’s praise is , though (and the preview uses phrases like “tears of joy,” “the Zune’s new Web browser smokes,” and “one of the richest music experiences on a portable device”), in some ways it just leaves me frustrated. Why, oh why, is Microsoft not making this thing into a phone? I understand that Microsoft already has partner agreements with other handset makers around Windows Mobile, and that Windows Mobile 6.5 and (especially) 7 are going to be decent upgrades over the current 6.1.

The upcoming Zune HD was the talk of the GDGT launch event in San Francisco last night, and we got a look at the device. First impressions: It’s compact, lightweight, good-looking and has a very slick interface.Microsoft’s newest media player has a bright, crisp OLED display that the dark lighting of the nightclub showed off to very good effect. It’s fast and responsive: Video looked great on it. Its 480 x 272 pixels are a far cry from HD, but they present a 16:9 aspect ration and they’re bright and contrasty, with deep, rich blacks, so you won’t mind much.
