The big news from Apple’s iPod event on Wednesday was the release of camera-enabled, fifth-generation iPod nanos as well as new revs of the iPod shuffle, iPod classic and iPod touch (sans camera). You can check out the full lineup here–all currently available for pre-order. Additionally, Steve Jobs and company (yes, the Thin Man was back at the center of the ring) introduced the new iTunes 9 software with some new design elements and features like Home Sharing, iTunes LP and Genius Mixes and an update to the iPhone OS (to version 3.1).

Donald and Jasmine discuss some iPod numbers as well as a troubling issue with the Zune HD that Microsoft appears to be ignoring, at least for the time being. Also on deck is a new music service from Google that’s aiming to make your music hunting experience a little easier, and some first impressions on the DoubleTwist software, which has been making waves among Palm Pre and other music phone users. Plus, we have some listener curiosity and hit on the fact that we’re not tech support for Dell.

Being one of those people that play the “Microsofts rat race game at signing up for the new updates before everyone else”, my review on the fall 2009 update is as followed. There really are only 4 obvious new updates to the dashboard since we’ve already received the larger update prior. Facebook The mother of bulkiness and redundant features. I know the whole social networking phase is still pretty popular and everyone is all over it but I do think that Microsoft spent too much time programming this section whereas they should have focused more on the Last.FM section, where it is strongly needed.

Microsoft’s Zune HD is an excitingly new wide-screen touchscreen product that made it clear that they did their research in creating an MPC player that is a top-of-the-line device. It is an incredibly attractive player, with a sleek casing and a big, glossy touchscreen. The body is made of brushed metal and the covering a tall and thin 3.3 inch OLED display with a home button at the end of the panel.

If you’re not sure what gifts to get your family and friends this holiday season then you’ll want to check out the Amazon Holiday Toy List . According to Amazon, the Holiday Toy List features tools that allows customers to search based on criteria such as “bestselling” or “average customer review,” then filter by age, gender, category, price and discount.

If you fly by faraway distances often, you might have looked at noise-cancelling headphones before (but we usually tend to cheap out of it, right?). They have two desires: the primary one is to block out loud background noises like plane engines . It works by analyzing the sound around you, isolating the background noise and basically create an exact opposite sound pattern that will cancel it – hence the noise-cancelling name. Now that the loud and unwanted sound is out of the picture, the second purpose is obviously to output good quality audio.

Anyone who understands the impact of the internet can see the impending wave of video streaming via the web to living rooms everywhere, but how far are we away? Previously, Roku got the ball rolling with its original “Netflix Player,” which streamed WatchItNow from Netflix to any TV. Now, the company has unveiled two new players, one, the HD-XR, with a better WiFi connection, and the other, the SD, only plays back standard definition video.

Android 2.0 has just been announced officially via the Android developers blog and YouTube. There are a few important new features, the greatest of which in my opinion is the contact aggregation: Android 2.0 will consolidate your contact from multiple accounts (Exchange, Gmail…) and that effectively makes Android 2.0 a people-centric OS, rather than a Service-centric OS.

From the marketing collaterals that have leaked, it is practically certain that the Blackberry 9700 will be named Curve 2. If you remember the Blackberry 85xx was the initial Curve. But then isn’t the Blackberry 8900 the Curve 2? Apparently not… it’s not a big deal, but that makes it just a little more confusing. If anything, Blackberry could have called the 8900 Curve 2 and the 9700 the Curve 3G… oh wait, someone else has been using something this.

An iPod dock a day keeps boredom at home away – at least that’s how the situation looks like for this specific market niche. The Pure Siesta iDock is exactly what it implies – a stereo DAB/ DAB+/ FM clock radio complete with an iPod and iPhone dock. You can now relax during your moments of siesta in the afternoons by enjoying your favorite music tunes on this with your iPhone/iPod docked, taking advantage of its large auto-dimming display, a quartet of quick-set alarms, sleep and snooze timers and 15 DAB/FM presets.

When Intel says that it won’t implement USB 3.0 in its chipset before 2011 it effectively means that mass adoption for this technology will be seriously delayed. Intel is the single largest provider of chipsets (the chips that traditionally handle input/output in a computer) in the world, so their support is critical. The bottom line is that Intel is currently busy with its transition from Core 2 to Nehalem (Core ix) architecture and PCI express 2.0. USB 3.0 is just not at the top of the list.

The HP Pavilion DM1 is not in the US market just yet, but that doesn’t mean it cannot debut anywhere else in the world. The HP Pavilion DM1 is now available in Europe a few weeks after making an appearance on HP’s Japanese website. Just to whet your appetite if you’re in the market for a new notebook, the Pavilion DM1 will run on an Intel Celeron 1.2GHz processor coupled with Intel’s GMA 4500MHD graphics chipset, 2GB RAM, a 230GB hard drive and Windows 7 Home Premium.

The EKING S515 MID phone is ready to hit the market sometime this month in China, where it will run on an Intel Atom 1.2GHz processor, bundled with a 16GB SSD, 1GB RAM and a 5″ WVGA touchscreen display. Available from Amazon China, it will retail for $669 as it ships from tomorrow onwards. Permalink: EKING S515 MID to roll out later this month from Ubergizmo | Hot: Zune HD Review

Check out the 90 Degree Charger concept which requires you to rotate the plug manually before the electric circuit is completed, similar to what you do with a timer. Whenever the gizmo connected to it is filled to the maximum, the plug-point will return to its standard position in order to break the circuit and prevent any wastage of electricity. Wonder when will something like this hit the market though.

Google Voice has further expanded its reach to include voicemail support for your carrier-issued number, among other features such as online, searchable voicemail, free automated voicemail transcription, custom voicemail greetings for different callers, email and SMS notifications and affordable international calls among others. Nice to know that this option will stick to you throughout your lifetime like a leech even when you decide it is time to switch carriers halfway through.

Japanese eyewear company Masunaga Optical recently unveiled a new solution for video gamers as well as bookworms (and basically anyone else who are involved in activities that reduce the amount of natural blinking) – the Wink Glasses that will help reduce incidences of dry eyes. Powered by a couple of Zinc-air batteries (PR41), the Wink Glasses will turn the glass opaque by filling its sheet with a transparent liquid crystal if it detects you have not blinked in the last five seconds.

Toshiba will mass produce a 14.6-megapixel CMOS sensor from Q3 next year onwards, where this little chip is manufactured using Toshiba’s 65 nm process on 300 mm wafers, capable of yielding around 500,000 sensors a month when production begins. Features include support for back-side illumination, and it remains to be seen whether cellphones shipping next year will see this 14.6-megapixel CMOS sensor in action or not.

As if there isn’t enough multi-memory card readers available in the market – Elecom has added yet another model to this overcrowded segment with their new model which is able to handle up to 40 different memory cards (inclusive of the same memory card with different speed classes). Bridgestone doesn’t only light up the world of Formula 1 with its brand of tires, but they have just announced an electronic paper device that will run on its “Quick-response Liquid Powder” technology. The company hopes to see this device used in market segments such as browsing electronic books and electronic data, where it will undergo testing with the assistance system for liaison officers at Kansai Urban Banking Corp from spring next year onwards.

Revo Technologies has rolled out the HERITAGE multi-format digital radio which resembles the classic European table radio designs which hail from the 50’s and 60’s decades of the previous century, although the innards are fully from the future. Inside the traditional wood and metal chassis lies support for a variety of radio broadcast types such as DAB, DAB+, FM and Wi-Fi internet radio alongside wireless audio streaming and docking support for all current iPod models.

Roku has just officially introduced the Roku HD XR, a box that lets you watch Netflix and Amazon Video movies directly on your TV, without the need for a PC/Mac. The Roku HD-XR sells for $130 and when compared to the Roku HD ($100), it has Wifi-N and a USB port for “future use”. You could argue that a Roku Box can be replaced by a PC, even a beefed up Netbook. That said, the Roku box is just cheaper and simpler to use if what you want is watch/rent from the two video services mentioned above.

Nissan has hopped aboard the personal mobility device bandwagon with their new prototype that was developed in tandem with AIST (Japan’s National Advanced Institute of Science and Technology). Comprising of a couple of foot boards where each of them are balanced on two wheels, the device’s tilt sensors will be able to know when you shift your weight to turn in the direction of your choice, bringing you around at a maximum speed of 5kph.

This isn’t exactly the same magnitude as last year’s Z2K scare , but it’s still an all-around bummer for all you Zune nuts. According to a spate of complaints posted to the Zune.net forums as of late, certain Zune HD units are not syncing their playcounts properly with the user’s PC and Zune Social accounts. To be a little more specific, it seems that if you let a song play through on the device it will not be counted as played — but if you skip to another tune before it has a chance to complete (but after 20 seconds or so), the play will be counted.

Ever wondered how Guitar Hero on a console is going to be played without those faux plastic guitars? Well, it won’t rely on the add on that you will find with the Nintendo DS version, that’s for sure. After all, it will use a standard electromyograph attached to the forearm, where the game will react to the position and pressure of all five fingers. Pure genius if you ask us, and it surely goes some lengths in reducing the amount of clutter in your living room at the same time.

Remember the BigDog quadruped robot that doesn’t seem to be fazed despite getting kicked from the side while being able to maintain its balance? Too bad this generosity on their part does not extend to other lines save for the MacBook Pro line, which we did mention that it will probably be refreshed pretty soon since it was skipped during the last round of updates. High end MacBook Pro configurations have dropped by up to $1,000 thereabouts according to vigilant price watchers, so those who don’t mind purchasing solid working notebooks without worrying about it being the latest in the market can look forward to picking one up now.

MPIO of Korea has released its V7 portable media player that comes with something many devices these days tend to have – a full touchscreen display. Features of the MPIO V7 include a 3″ touchscreen display at 400 x 240 resolution, support for MP3, WMA, OGG, FLAC, APE, ACC, AVI, WMV, MPEG-4, FLV and RMVB formats, an integrated accelerometer, a built-in FM tuner and transmitter, voice recording capability and a choice between 4GB, 8GB and 16GB capacities. No word on pricing as at press time though.

Are you a nervous first time mom-to-be who wants nothing but the very best for your little one? Most people would say yes, and figure out that if their kid listens to Mozart or other musical geniuses while they were in the womb, they would turn out to be at the top of the class always. Pretty warped thinking since I’m pretty sure Mozart and Beethoven never had that luxury during their 9-month tenure in their mother’s womb.

The iodd external hard drive from CNS of Korea will not only transport all your precious data and stash it somewhere safe just in case the primary hard drive on your computer fails, but it also enables users to install programs straight from the iodd as long as the file comes in ISO format, doing away with the need for external DVD drives. Guess netbook owners will find this handy instead of toting around another peripheral to get their programs on discs installed.

Hospitals might be filled with sick people but interestingly enough, it is one of the cleanest places to be in due to the diligence and precautions that the staff take to minimize infection. How about the computer keyboard then – especially public ones? How many people still use their Mini DV tapes, assuming the gear they own still work? For those who have more Mini DV tapes that they can shake a stick at, why not use some of the spoilt ones’ casing to function as an impromptu iPhone stand? Cheap and tacky, but it does get the job done. Great recycling idea – now if only someone could add some color and interesting artwork to these DIY iPhone stands, they could be on to something here.

NEC does have a prototype tablet PC in the works, where it will resemble more closely to a mobile Internet device thanks to its form factor that will sport a touchscreen display at up to 8″. Meant to function more towards a full-fledged PC, we still have no word on its technical specifications, and despite the mockup showing off Android, it might not be reflective of the final design. NEC has praised the device’s speedy boot up time which might point towards cloud computing as part of its specifications.

If you’re a naturally indecisive person, we would advise you to well steer clear of the Pentax K-x digital SLR as you will probably wait for 3 more generations of dSLRs to pass by before you can make a purchase decision. Why do we say that? Well, it comes in a choice of 100 colors and an equal number of styles, as the body alone will have 20 colors to choose from while the grip will come in 5 color combinations for each body color.

HP’s latest portable desktop, so to speak, is the Pavilion dv6t Quad Edition notebook that will rely on the latest Core i7 720QM or 820QM quad-core processor, packing in a 1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 230M video card alongside a maximum of 8GB RAM, up to 500GB of hard drive space, and a choice between the DVD burner or Blu-ray combo drive. You won’t get full HD resolution on the 15.6? display though as it maxes out at 1,366 × 768 pixels alongside LED backlight.

Lenovo’s IdeaPad Y550P is a powerful notebook based on the new Intel Core i7 processor alongside the ability to hold up to 8GB RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce 240M graphics card and a 15.6″ display that has a resolution of 1,366 × 768. Of course, those who need to get their entertainment on-the-go will have the choice of picking up the Blu-ray drive instead of the Super Multi DVD drive that comes as a standard. An integrated sub-woofer adds to the audio quality be it gaming or watching movies, where it works well in tandem with the automatic theater quality audio/video optimization.
