For the few hundred people who are camped in the parking lot at the Shops of Mission Viejo for the opening of California’s first Microsoft Store , the question isn’t Apple or Microsoft. The real question is Microsoft or Justin Bieber ? As early as 3:45 Wednesday people began lining up for the grand opening of the store, only the second one in the nation, which opens at 10 a.m. Thursday.  Lines are expected to swell to over 1,500 people.

The Internet is at the center of modern life keeping you connected and informed through email, IMs, RSS feeds, social networking sites and Search. Keeping up often requires time shifting with companion devices like netbooks. Powered by energy-efficient Intel Atom processors, the HP Mini 311 is optimized for Web access and can handle standard productivity apps – but is light enough to carry everywhere at just 3.22 lbs. Its 16:9 11.6-Inch diagonal HD LED BrightView display makes viewing HD content and two documents side by side possible.

LG showed off their newest project at the FPD-International 200 9 show in Japan recently, a 15-inch transparent display. Are we seeing the future of TV and computer monitors? Who knows, but it’s interesting to see nonetheless. Of course, it’s still a prototype, and we have no idea when we’ll see it in retail, how much it will cost, or anything specific. We do know that it uses AMOLED ( active matrix organic light emitting diode ) technology, but that’s about it.
Accessing Zune Marketplace in UKrichfrombechtle.wordpress.com
10/28/2009
As you can see from my previous post ( here ) I am now a huge fan of Microsoft’s Zune 4.0 desktop software. However being in the UK means that a lot of the features are unavailable to us…mainly the Zune marketplace. Zune Marketplace: The Marketplace is where you can preview and purchase songs, videos, apps, podcasts, games and more. As you can see in the screenshot above, it’s got pretty much everything you could want: New releases Top Songs Top Videos Topical/focus sections and you can split it down into genre, which then gives you all the above but specific to that kind of music.
Motorola Cliq Reviewubergizmo.com

After a long walk in the desert, Motorola surprised everyone (or at least me) with the Motorola Cliq, an Android smartphone with a QWERTY sliding keyboard and most importantly MotoBlur, a combination of software and web services designed to unify all your communications in a single medium that is “people-oriented” instead of “service-oriented”. It seems very nice in theory and our initial impression was good. Now, we have spent enough time with the Motorola Cliq to share a complete review of the device.

Don’t balk at the Cheetah C50 GPS speed camera detector’s $100 price tag as it could potentially save you much more than that in the long run if you’re a speed demon who loves zooming down the freeway whenever cops are not around to issue you a ticket. In fact, it is also smart enough to identify various types of cameras including speed, red light, speed-on-green, and can inform you on whether the camera is on a freeway, a highway, an exit ramp, a frontage road, a nearby city street, in a tunnel, after the end of a tunnel, on an overpass, in a school zone, in a construction zone or even near a bridge ahead.

Samsung’s foray into the AMOLED TV world has yielded this 30″ screen which supports 3D picture (stereoscopic) alongside the traditional full HD resolution view for movie buffs. The panel is painfully thin at a mere 2.5mm, where it was made possible thanks to Samsung’s patented Simultaneous Emission with Active Voltage (SEAV) technology. Too bad watching shows in 3D will still require you to wear a dorky looking pair of glasses, good thing this can be done from the comfort of your own home.
Easy Energy YoGen chargerubergizmo.com
10/28/2009
Easy Energy will release its YoGen charger come this November 15th, where it will allow you to juice up any exhaused small to mid-size personal electronic device without batteries or requiring to plug the charger in. After all, the charger will obtain its energy as long as you pull the ripcord, kicking the internal alternator into life to generate enough juice so that your other devices are provided with a new lease of life.

Logitech has announced the Harmony IR Extender System which makes it a snap for you to control your devices even when they are hidden away from sight within a closed cabinet. There is no need for any programming with this, allowing you to use it right out of the box as long as you have the smarts to play with it. All you need to do is place the discrete IR receiver in a convenient, visible location, hook it up to the IR blasters and mini blasters and you’re good to go.

Fashion label Roxy is delving into the cellphone market with the new Roxy Phone. This isn’t waterproof by the way, and you won’t be able to make phone calls on it while surfing. It comes with pretty generic specifications including a 3.2-megapixel camera with flash, a 2.4″ QVGA display, HSDPA support, MP3 playback, an integrated FM tuner, a microSD memory card slot and Bluetooth connectivity among others. What makes it different is the signature Roxy designs that you see on the exterior of this candybar handset.

happiness hat from Lauren McCarthy on Vimeo . The Happiness Hat that you will see in the video here will play with the Pavlovian principle when it comes to making you smile, where it will driving a metal spike into its wearer’s head whenever it detects that the wearer is starting to frown. Not exactly the best method to induce a smile by any means, but it is no less effective, that’s for sure.

LG has demonstrated a 15″ transparent OLED display prototype. While using these displays on personal computers doesn’t seem so great, imagine what transparent displays can let one build, especially in retail spaces, architecture or even heads-up displays in vehicles, helmets and so on. With a light transmittance of “only” 30%, I’m tempted to call this “translucent” rather than “transparent”, but you get the idea. Samsung has a similar technology, although they were reportedly demoing a much smaller display: 4.3″.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a recall for all Belkin SurgeMaster Surge Protectors in the market, currently numbered at approximately 68,700 of them. Apparently, the molding of the plastic 360 degree rotating plug that makes it a snap for cord movement, is more than capable of cracking or detaching from the plug assembly, resulting in a shock hazard to consumers. All consumers ought to cease using these power strips ASAP while contacting Belkin for a new, free replacement unit.

The Tokyo Motor Show played host to a variety of concepts and designs, where among these is the Daihatsu DecaDeca. It will function as a decent mobile workstation considering its interiors will feature fold-away seats that can be specially arranged in an array of patterns, letting you hold private meetings within or even store large items. A flatscreen with a fold-down desk lets you do your work on the road, while the extremely low and completely flat floor makes your coming in and going out a cinch.

Motorola has launched the LS420, a dual 4.2″ display photo frame and the LS720D, a larger sibling with dual 7″ displays. Both can display images received via email, but they can also play MP3 files or internet radio, thanks to the integrated speaker. They connect to the internet via a WIFI connection. The Segway is a pretty cool invention where it helps you get to your destination without having you break a sweat while you’re at it, but it might seem to be out of reach for most ordinary Joes. They can then forget about the Air Board though, as this $14,000 personal hovercraft will float 8″ above the ground at all times, reaching a maximum speed of 15 mph while running around and about for an hour or so on just 1.3 gallons of gas. A couple of levers on the steering bar ensures you will be able to steer in the right direction as you shift your weight around.

LG was parading a slew of display technology to the masses at FPD 2009, where some of them include the super slim 47” LED backlight TV which measures a mere 5.9mm – now that’s really thin! Imagine accidentally letting fly your Wiimote at the screen, would such a calculation of physics result in the Wiimote breaking through the LED TV completely? Apart from the drool-worthy TV, LG also showcased a variety of AMOLED concepts and a 13.3” In-Cell Projected Cap.

AUO does not intend to call it a day just yet, offering a series of OLED technologies which will definitely dazzle your eyes, comprising of a 14″ OLED TV panel with FHD resolution, a 100,000:1 contrast ratio and 16 million colors. 14″ might be rather small for those who have been so used to extremely large displays, but bear in mind for an OLED display it is considered to be of average size although you can be expected to fork out a handsome amount for something like this to reside in your living room.
10/28/2009
AUO also has a heart for the future generation by working on environmentally friendly LED panels, with their latest being a 65″ eco-friendly LED panel that will come with QFHD high resolution. This model sips up to 50% less juice on average compared to other devices occupying the same niche, boasting a 7.9mm thickness for its 65″ TFT LCD module alongside a contrast ratio of over 2,000,000:1. AUO has also taken the pains to include the latest pre-mixed “LED Light Cell” with 256 zones for local dimming, giving you a premium image quality always.
10/28/2009
AUO has the best interests of home theater enthusiasts at heart by rolling out the new 58″ Ultra Wide 2.35:1 TV display which will boast a superbly high 2,560 x 1,080 ultra-wide resolution, letting you enjoy 2.35:1 format films without those annoying black bars which we have all come to get so used to. Apart from that, the 120Hz double frame rate will enable you you enjoy images and a movie experience similar to that in the theater, with another good point thrown in – you won’t have to deal with pesky incoming phone calls on other people’s cellphones that aren’t in silent mode.

A video of the Blackberry Tour 2 (now with WIFI and a trackpad). The current codename for this product is “essex”, and it might be called BlackBerry Tour 2, or something else, we just don’t know. Besides from the addition of WIFI and the trackpad (many customers complain that the trackball gets eventually tuck with dust) there’s apparently nothing new, so we’ll call this a minor update.

A wild rumor about an upcoming release of an Nvidia Ion 2 chipset has surfaced on the web. Q4 2009 seems like a weird date to launch a product, but February is typically a “refresh” time for the PC industry, so samples must be out there already if that was true. In any case, the rumored performance would be 2X the graphics speed of the current Ion chipset. Ion is also known as the GeForce 9400M and is found in a number of laptops (like the Macbook Pro) or netbooks. It works with Core 2 or Atom Intel processors.

GPS navigation software companies ought to sit up and pay close attention – the folks at Google have offered free turn-by-turn navigation service for their Maps software, and even in beta they have gotten off the right footing. Currently available only for the Android OS 2.0 platform, it will be made available to similarly powered devices when they ship, while other platform support will be announced by both carriers and phone manufacturers when the parties are ready.

JVC has taken the plunge into the world of Blu-ray players by introducing the XV-BP11 which won’t impress anyone but the uninformed, unfortunately . After all, it is only capable of recognizing Blu-ray Profile 1.1, which means you won’t be able to take advantage of Internet features even if you wanted to, but it does have its saving grace of measuring a mere 1.5″ tall. Features include a front-panel USB connection, native support for AVCHD (H.264) video, HDMI 1.3 connectivity, RCA video and coaxial audio and analog audio connections.

Samsung recently paraded a new netbook that will boast a 7″ AMOLED display that has 1,024 x 600 resolution alongside a 16:9 contrast ratio for cinematic buffs, a brightness level of 300 cd/m2 and a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. This ought to keep you drooling for quite some time, but we hope the future will bring something much larger than just 7″ of viewing area – isn’t it regressing to the early days of the Eee PC?
RAmos W7 up on eBayubergizmo.com
10/28/2009
The W7 from RAmos is now available on eBay – in fact, there are 10 of these puppies which will retail for $499.99 alongside an additional $49.99 for shipping and handling. This doesn’t sound too attractive for an Android MID device that has a RK2808 chip running at its heart, where it certainly can’t hold a candle to the Cortex A8 core that’s running in other devices. The ROPID (short for a combination of Robot and Rapid) is touted to be able to “run” and turn quickly in place, responding to verbal commands as well thanks to Raytron’s BSRM01-01E voice recognition chip embedded within. Capable of clearing heights of 8cm, this 38cm tall robot still has some issues to work out when asked questions – perhaps the software isn’t powerful enough to make the necessary adjustments for selected questions.

Apple might ends its exclusive carrier agreement with AT&T in 2010, which would also mean the end of a speculated $450 carrier subsidy for the iPhone. Apparently, this scenario would likely happen when Apple works hand in hand with Verizon, where it might command a $300 carrier subsidy thereabouts although initial losses can be stemmed and made up for in volume with Verizon likely to move around 14 million iPhones as projected in the year 2011.

litl offers Easel netbookubergizmo.com
10/28/2009
A pretty obscure startup known as litl is readying its new Easel netbook that will come with a rare customized operating system, according to an FCC filing for the device. This 12″ system will offer a display that is more than capable of bending beyond the 180 degree mark while featuring a rounded, child-friendly look. Underneath the hood, users will find it run on a custom version of Linux alongside a “card” interface which enables users to choose from blue cards for core apps and settings, black channel cards for news, weather and other widgets, and white cards for Firefox pages.

The new LG Chocolate Touch looks set to be available from Verizon, where this model will come with a 3.2-megapixel camera alongside EV-DO Rev. 0 connectivity. Doesn’t seem to send too much shiver down our spines with anticipation, considering the handset does not seem to be up and running with EV-DO Rev. A alongside a design that seems to hail from the previous century. As for the operating system, it doesn’t seem as though it will threaten anyone or back Apple into a corner, making us wonder just how well this device will fare when available.

The IdeaPad S12 from Lenovo has been released to feature NVIDIA’s Ion graphics chipset alongside Windows 7 Home Premium as the operating system of choice, offering it enough visual juice to handle the full Aero Glass interface alongside decoding 1080p video while playing nice with recent 3D technology as well. VIZIO has just introduced a couple more LED backlit HDTV to their lineup – the 19″ and 23″ models, where the latter will support full HD resolution without adding on the bulk. Interestingly enough, these can also double up as extremely large picture frames, although the monthly power bill would be something you might want to look into if that’s the purpose of the device on your side. The 19″ and 23″ models will retail for $349 and $399, respectively when available.

I-O Data has rolled out a new PLC (Power Line Communication) LAN Converter which is suppose to make it a snap to hook up one’s TVs to the Internet, allowing you to enjoy video-on-demand services in Japan. We wonder whether the service will be free or not though, but we do look forward to the amount of shows available for the masses. With more and more people getting way many more channels than ever, it is still surprising to know that there “isn’t anything good on TV” to watch.

Here’s a leaked image of the upcoming HTC Droid Eris which won’t be as powerful as the Motorola Droid, although it will still be powered by a 528MHz Qualcomm chip and Android 1.5 running right out of the box. No idea on why Android 2.0 wasn’t included with this release, alongside the fact that the Droid Eris will be running on a slower processor and older OS. Perhaps it is an entry level market that HTC is targeting with the Eris…
